Shopify Admin API Introduction
May 3, 2026
Starting with the Shopify Admin API
The Shopify Admin API is one of the most important areas of Shopify app development because it allows applications to communicate with Shopify store data. This is where the course begins moving from application setup and interface development into working with real store information.
How an App Communicates with Shopify
Applications communicate with Shopify by sending API requests and receiving responses containing the requested information or the result of an operation. Understanding this request and response flow is fundamental before working with products, customers, orders, inventory, or other Shopify resources.
Core API Concepts
- How Shopify applications communicate with store data through API requests and responses
- How read and write permissions control which store resources an application can access
- Why access tokens are required for authenticated communication with Shopify
- The conceptual difference between Shopify Admin API and Storefront API responsibilities
Permissions and Access
Shopify applications cannot automatically access every piece of store information. Access is controlled through permissions that define which resources the application can read or modify. The access token then allows authenticated requests to be made within the permissions granted to the application.
Moving Into Real Store Data
Once these fundamentals are clear, developers can begin working with actual Shopify resources and building features around store data. Understanding authentication, permissions, requests, responses, and API responsibilities provides the foundation for the more practical Admin API development that follows.
